Version 1.0, effective 2026-06-10. This policy describes our current data practices during the beta and is pending legal review. UnaMentis is a noncommercial open-source project. UnaMentis is intended for users 13 and older.
The short version
- Your learning content, transcripts, and session history stay on your device.
- UnaMentis servers receive only aggregate, non-content telemetry such as latency, usage counts, and estimated provider costs. No transcripts. No audio.
- Telemetry is keyed to a random identifier created for each app installation, not to your name or email.
- Your IP address is coarsened before storage on telemetry and log intake.
- If you use a cloud voice provider, that provider receives your audio and transcripts to produce responses. On-device providers keep audio local.
What stays on your device
The apps process your learning sessions locally. Conversation transcripts, session history, learning progress, and preferences are stored on your device. UnaMentis servers do not receive or store this content.
What reaches UnaMentis servers
- Account data (hosted beta only): if you register for the hosted beta, we store your email address, a securely hashed password, and basic device information (a device fingerprint and the app or browser user agent). This is used to create and secure your account.
- Aggregate session telemetry: non-content metrics such as session length, turn and interruption counts, latency, estimated provider costs, and thermal and network events. This telemetry contains no transcripts, no audio, and no learning content.
- Coarsened network address: on telemetry and log intake, we coarsen your IP address before storing it (IPv4 to a /24 network, IPv6 to a /48). We do not store your exact IP address from these endpoints.
Per-install identifier
Telemetry is keyed to a random identifier generated separately for each installation of the app. It is not derived from your name, email, or any hardware identifier, and it is not used to track you across apps or websites.
Voice and transcripts
UnaMentis servers do not store voice recordings or transcripts. When you use a cloud voice provider, your audio and transcripts are sent to that third-party AI provider to produce responses. Their handling and retention are governed by that provider's policies. If you select on-device providers, audio stays on your device.
Third-party AI providers
Parts of the experience rely on external AI providers acting as sub-processors. Our Sub-Processor List documents the current set and exactly what data each one receives. It is kept up to date in the open, in the same repository as the code.
Choosing your privacy level
UnaMentis is designed so you can choose how much data leaves your device:
- Cloud providers: the most capable option. Audio and transcripts are sent to the selected third-party AI provider during sessions.
- Self-hosted server: because the server is open source, you can run it on infrastructure you control. Data sent to a self-hosted server stays within your own infrastructure, except for any cloud providers you configure.
- On-device providers: the strongest privacy option. Speech recognition, synthesis, and language models run locally, and your audio and transcripts never leave the device.
Children
UnaMentis is intended for users 13 and older. Registration for the hosted beta requires a self-attestation that you are at least 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13. Verifiable parental consent flows are not offered in the beta.
This website
unamentis.org is a static site and does not include analytics or advertising scripts. It is served through Cloudflare Pages, and like any web host, Cloudflare processes connection data such as IP addresses to deliver and protect the site. If you submit the beta sign-up form, the information you enter (name, email, device type, and your answers) is stored in a Google-hosted spreadsheet via Google Apps Script and is used only for beta program communication.
Your choices, export, and deletion
We aim to minimize the data we store. Automated export and deletion are not yet available in the beta. To request export or deletion of your account data or beta sign-up information, email info@unamentis.org. Enforced retention schedules and an in-app privacy dashboard are planned and not yet implemented.
Changes to this policy
When our practices change, we will update this page with a new version number and effective date.
